Faldo to use experience

Tuesday, October 23rd, 2007

Faldo to use experience
European Ryder Cup captain Nick Faldo hopes his experience will benefit his side when they take on the USA in Kentucky next year.

Faldo has already seen vice-captain Paul McGinley resign, but is confident ahead of the Valhalla Club showdown.

He said: “I was involved in 11 Ryder Cups. I’ve served under five different captains, each one had great qualities and I’ll take little bits of that.”

Azinger swipe at Faldo

Azinger swipe at Faldo
American Ryder Cup captain Paul Azinger has teased opposite number Nick Faldo over the resignation of his assistant Paul McGinley.

Azinger wasted no time joking that Faldo’s assistants were “dropping like flies” when the two came together in Valhalla, the venue for next September’s match, for a “year to go” press conference.

“I am trying to surround myself with the right people, people who can help me,” said Azinger. “I’m not looking for baby-sitters, I want assistants who can keep me from making mistakes.”

McGinley stood down last month saying he wanted to concentrate on trying to play his way into the side again, although there were reports that it followed his non-selection for the Britain and Ireland Seve Trophy team Faldo was leading in Ireland.

Weir breaks winless drought

Weir breaks winless drought
Canadian Mike Weir broke a victory drought of over three years by making a six-foot putt on 18 for par to win the Fry’s Electronics Open.

It was Weir’s first win since the 2004 Nissan Open and the eighth PGA Tour title of his career.

“It’s unbelievable, I can’t put it into words,” Weir said. “It has been a long time coming, about three-and-a-half years, and I’ve put a lot of hard work in.”

The hard work has included a swing change that set Weir back before he could move forward. Weir was ranked as high eighth in the world in 2004 but started to slip. He was 48th entering this week but figures to move up after the win.
