To Win The Tournament Odds
If a player is 25/1, this means that if the player wins you get £25 for every £1 you bet, plus your original stake back. If a player is ‘odds-on’ then the odds are expressed as 1/10. This means that you for every £10 you bet you get £1 back if you win, plus your original stake.
Betting to Win
You place your bet on a player to win. If the player obliges, then you are in the money! So if you back Colin Montgomery to win The Open @ 25/1 and you bet £10 ‘To Win’ you’ll get £250 + your £10 stake back.
Betting on a Place Finish
For The Open Championship, if a player finishes in the Top 5 at the end of the tournament he will have finished in ‘A Place’. As with prices to ‘Win’ the tournament, prices to finished ‘Placed’ will be offered for each player. In the case of a tournament with a smaller field, the ‘Place Terms’ are reduced. For example, The HSBC World Matchplay has 16 competitors and a player is deemed to have finished in a place if he finishes 1st or 2nd.
Betting Each Way
This is a combination of Betting to Win and Betting on a Place Finish. You pay the same stake for each part of the bet. The amount you win for the ‘Place Finish’ is your stake x ¼ the price of the player to win the tournament. So, if you placed £10 each way on Ernie Els @ 20/1 and he won the tournament you would win £210 for the ‘Win’ plus £60 for the place. If Ernie finished second, you would lose the ‘Win’ bet, but still collect the ‘Place’ winnings.
Match Play Tournament Bets
Match Bet
In Match-Play events each 2 Ball pairing are in direct competition with one another. Simply choose which player will win more holes during the round. In team competitions a Tie price is offered but in knockout tournaments extra holes will be played until one player has beaten the other.
Stroke Play Tournament Bets
Match Bet
Bet on whether one player will beat or tie another over the 4 rounds of the tournament. i.e. a ‘mythical’ match over the 72 holes of the tournament. The 2 players may not actually play directly against one another through the tournament, but the winner will be the player with the lowest score at the end.
Two Ball Bet
Bet on whether one player will outscore another player over one round.
Three Ball Bet
Bet on whether one player will outscore another two nominated players over one round.
Group Betting
Before the tournament, and each morning for the current day’s round, we’ll select a group of players, give each player odds of beating the rest in the group and you have to pick the winner.
